Foreign Exchange Student Incidents

My mother was a foreign exchange student to the United States in high school. She told me about a couple of language incidents, as follows:

• In the U.S. we have "canned goods" drives where people donate food to worthy causes. My mother got to announce over the school Public Address system that everyone should remember to bring "good cans".

• My mother said that when she first started her U.S. high school adventure, on one of the first day's of school she asked for a "sh_t of paper" instead of a sheet.
